P.E and School Sports
Physical Education and school sport at Royal Park Academy is organised by our outstanding PE Specialist. Sport is an integral part of our school because of the role it plays in developing our children. Our school values are embedded into our PE curriculum and our PE lessons.
As a school we have high aspirations for all of our children, we encourage them to dream big and be the best they can be. We expect all of the children to give it their all so they can achieve their full potential and give them the best opportunity to achieve their individual goals.
We believe in giving all pupils, irrespective of their academic or physical ability, the opportunity to discover and develop their physical potential through a balanced and developmental programme of activities. We do so in the belief that physical education in a safe, supportive and challenging environment is a vital component in the development of children’s physical and emotional health and well being. This, we believe, includes qualities such as enjoyment, tolerance, co-operation and the development of expertise.
In this context, we are committed to achieving maximum participation for all children whilst recognising the need for equal opportunities on the grounds of gender and children’s specific individual needs. Within a caring and supportive environment, we believe in encouraging positive relationships between groups and individuals while providing challenge and stimulation through physical activity.
We believe in allowing children to apply skills, knowledge and concepts, to experiment, to be creative and imaginative and to recoginse and celebrate progression and achievement within the physical medium.
Royal Park Primary Academy House System
Inter-house sport is an incredibly effective way to generate team morale and promote sport and physical exercise within school. At Royal Park Primary Academy we value the importance of regular exercise and how sport can develop children physically but also psychologically.
A greater emphasis has been put on internal house competitions because it gives children the opportunity to play in competitive sport, especially those who do not have access to competitive sport outside of school or to those children lack the confidence to attend a club outside of school.
The benefits of internal sports competitions:
- Increased participation of sport by all children.
- Introduction to competitive sport in a safe and controlled environment.
- Exposes children to competition and the opportunity to win and lose. Giving children experiences of winning and losing and developing an ability to deal with both situations.
- Constantly promoting the importance of being a team player.
- Developing children into leaders and giving them opportunities to become House Captains.
- Promotes cross phase collaborative work.
- Promotes competitions and prepares children for secondary settings.
- Increases the quality and participation in external sporting competitions.
- Potentially increasing the participation rates of after school clubs and commitments to external clubs and teams.
We aim for our PE lessons to include challenges for all pupils, which involve developing:
• A feeling improvement
• A sense of accomplishment/achievement
• Learning something new and wanting to learn more both physically and cognitively.
• Physical well being.
• A feeling of independence.
• Wanting to perform well and with imagination and flair.
We see the above as important to developing and maintaining high standards of P.E. in our school, and through the P.E. lessons, challenges for all pupils will adhere to achieve.
PE lessons will also incorporate the houses into the lessons by having the children bibbed in their colours throughout all lessons, this does not mean that children will only be restricted to working with the children in their houses. Activities within lessons will allow children to work collaboratively with all of the houses but there will be opportunities for children to score points for their house.
How to score house points in lessons:
- Excellent responses and answers during group discussions.
- Demonstrating good sportsmanship.
- Helping other around them.
- Demonstrating maximal effort all of the time.
- Engaging with all activities with full enthusiasm.
- Demonstrating perseverance when they do not succeed at first.
- Challenging themselves and extending other children’s’ learning around them.
- Winning competitions and activities within lessons.
